Descent 3 programmer releases the classic space shooter’s source code, including a surprise patch developed 15 years ago but never released-

The source code for Descent 3 has been released, and is available to download now on Github.

Spotted by Linux programmer Daniel Gibson on Mastodon, the code was released by Descent 3 programmer Kevin Bentley earlier this week. Described by Bentley as the “latest version” of the code, it includes an unreleased ‘1.5’ patch codesigned by Bentley and another Descent 3 designer, Kevin Slutter, several years ago.

“The first thing I want to do is get everything compiling again,” writes Bentley in the release announcement. “After that, the code needs to be cleaned up some, to remove the old version control comments.” He notes that “a lot of this code was written by a really great team, but keep in mind we were much younger and less experienced back then.”

Descent 3 originally …

Dustborn devs call out the ‘tidal wave of hate and abuse’ that’s engulfed the game- ‘Those who engage in such behavior will be removed from our community’-

Dustborn developer Red Thread Games has released a statement decrying the “tidal wave of hate and abuse” that has surrounded the studio and game since its release last week.

Dustborn is an alt-history Americana road trip game that wears its politics on its sleeve: It’s a game about a “group of outcast queers and exploited workers [who] fight fascist cops and smash corporate drones while navigating new and evolving relationships,” as we put it in our June preview. It holds a “mostly positive” user rating on Steam and an aggregate critical score of 68 on Metacritic—by all appearances it’s a decent game targeting a pretty specific audience.

But it’s also attracted considerable “culture wars” backlash, as seen in various user reviews, YouTube videos, and Reddit threads whe…

HAVN’s new ‘Unisheet’ glass case is the totally panoramic PC you’ve been waiting for-

It’s becoming increasingly clear that you’re absolutely nobody at the Computex show this year if you haven’t got a panoramic goldfish bowl in your booth. However, newbie case specialist HAVN has gone one better than the competition with its new HS 420.

What most, if not all, of the alternatives in the panoramic case segment share, including the Corsair 3500X we featured earlier today, is a two-piece glass construction. Basically, two sides of the case are glass panels, and each of those two panels is a separate sheet of glass.

Not the HAVN HS 420. It has what HAVN is calling Unisheet Heatformed Glass. Put simply, it’s a single sheet of glass with a right-angle bend. No seams, no joins, just one large sheet of glass for the front and side panels. What’s more, the bend in the …

Here’s when Sons of the Forest releases in your time zone-

Update: Sons of the Forest is out now on Steam. There was a short delay to the launch, which seemed to be caused by a problem with the game’s Steam page or Steam itself. It took me several tries to purchase Sons of the Forest due to site errors and login timeouts, but I eventually managed to download it and start playing.

The long wait to play co-op survival game Sons of the Forest is nearly over, and soon you’ll be able to set foot on a mysterious and dangerous island, either on your own or with up to eight players in co-op. You’ll need to gather resources, find food and fresh water, craft weapons and gear, build a base, and defend it from the island’s terrifying cannibals in this sequel to Endnight Games’ The Forest.

If you’re stuck in the middle of Baldur’s Gate 3’s karmic dice debate, Larian says you should think of it like ‘a friendly DM’-

There’s been a lot of chatter in the last few weeks about whether you should have Baldur’s Gate 3‘s karmic dice option turned on or off. It’s something that’s turned on by default, intended to help level the playing field a bit and throw a few good rolls your way when things are looking very much bad and vice versa. Some players claimed that it was actively gimping their high-end gameplay though, with enemies receiving the same treatment with fudged dice rolls—dealing massive damage and causing survivability issues all round. Despite Larian saying it was an early access issue that would be fixed in the full release, there’s still been tons of players going to bat for both sides of the argument.

With so much uncertainty around the feature, IGN noted that dire…

Intel’s earnings on the up as CEO dismisses Arm CPU threat as ‘pretty insignificant’-

There’s good news for Intel, as it has beaten expectations with its latest financial forecasts. Perhaps that’s why CEO Pat Gelisinger is so bullish about the threat from a new generation of Arm chips.

During an earnings call with investors, Gelsinger dismissed the threat to Intel’s traditional x86 CPUs from a new generation of Arm chips announced by Qualcomm and reportedly planned by AMD and Nvidia, too.

“Arm and Windows client alternatives, generally they’ve been relegated to pretty insignificant roles in the PC business. We take all our competition seriously, but I think history is our guide here. We don’t see these as potentially being all that significant overall,” Gelsinger said.

Slightly contradicting himself, however, Gelsinger also opined that Arm chips could b…

Ark 2 delayed until ‘end of 2024’-

Ark 2 has been delayed until late 2024, according to a post on the dinosaur survival game’s official site. While a specific date for the sequel to Ark: Survival Evolved has never been announced by Studio Wildcard, it was planned for sometime this year.

“After careful consideration, we have decided to delay the sequel’s launch to the end of 2024, when it will still launch exclusively on Xbox, Game Pass, and Windows distribution platforms,” the post reads. “We’ve put much thought into delaying ARK 2 for the betterment of the final product and the team’s well-being. This news will be disappointing to many—we feel it too—but we’re confident this heavy decision is the right one.”

Reasons for the delay include the complications of using the relatively new U…

The best-named game of all time nearly could’ve been called something else because some of its developers hated the pun

If you’re here ready to debate my declaration of “the best-named game of all time,” I’m going to suggest you’ve never played Satisfactory, because it embodies its name perfectly. It’s the kind of pun you write on a white board to cause an entire room to spontaneously groan, because everyone wants to roll their eyes but also knows they’ll never better it. When the developers at Coffee Stain were first working on Satisfactory, though, they weren’t all in agreement that the name was destined. In fact, it was a bit of a fight.

“This was before I worked at Coffee Stain, but I know the story,” community manager Snutt Treptow said in a recent interview with PC Gamer. “When we were brainstorming we had a bunch of ideas, a bunch of different names. Satisfactory ended up being on…

Machine learning means we can read a 2,000-year-old carbonized scroll buried by Mount Vesuvius and turns out it’s all about the pleasures of stuffing your face-

You hear that? That’s the sound of people everywhere saying ‘they can do that?’ after reading how researchers used imaging, computer vision, and machine learning to read ancient Roman text within what most would think amounts to little more than a stick of charcoal by looking at it.

The 2000-year-old scroll is one of more than 800 discovered in the ruins of Herculaneum, a Roman city buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Carbonised by the eruption, each scroll is incredibly fragile, and any attempt to open one up to see if it’s in any way legible has ended in a crumbling mess. Yet researchers have been keen to unlock the secrets stored in these scrolls, and it looks like machine learning might have proven the key to doing so.

Firstly, the scroll read by researche…

NieR producer promises the series will continue as long as creator Yoko Taro is alive to work on it-

First reported by Japanese site 4Gamer.net and shared in English by Genki_JPN on Twitter, on November 16, NieR creator Yoko Taro and producer Yosuke Saito gave a presentation about the series as part of the South Korean G-Star conference. At the end, Saito promised that the series would continue as long as Yoko Taro was still alive and kicking, but they had nothing concrete to share at the moment.

The talk largely focused on the development of NieR: Automata, with intriguing anecdotes like how the game’s distinctive character art was targeting a Japanese audience, with hopes that it would capture a “niche” market elsewhere. The two also dished on what they see as the competing, yet also complimentary demands of a game’s producer versus a creative lead.

Operating off multiple…

Payday 3 reveals two new characters and a year of post-launch DLC-

Payday 3 is rapidly approaching its September 21 launch date and Starbreeze has revealed two new characters joining the team for the delightful heists to come. They’ve also announced their roadmap for the first entire year of DLC, focusing on the four expansions that will comprise the Year 1 – The Bad Apple releases. These being the ones you get some of or all of for the more expensive Silver and Gold versions of the game.

Besides the DLCs Payday 3 will have releases of seasonal events, playable characters, new enemy weapons, an upgrade to Unreal Engine 5, cosmetics to wear, and the general updates to quality of life you’d expect from an always-online game. It’ll also gain nebulous “new features.”

For now all we really know are some themes for releases, as names are “yet to …

The best gaming keyboard I’ve reviewed all year is down to $145 for Black Friday-

You know what makes a gaming keyboard great? Lubed switches. That might not have been what you thought I’d say, but when you get going on a board with such slick switches, it’s typing bliss. That’s why I love the Asus ROG Strix Scope II 96 Wireless—it offers all the important features for a PC gamer with the added benefit of lubed switches.

The Strix II 96 is also $144.99 over at Amazon for Black Friday right now.

I waxed lyrical about how great a set of finely lubed mechanical switches are in my Asus ROG Strix Scope II 96 Wireless review, but I’ll give you the skinny here, too. A drop of lube inside each switch makes for a much smoother actuation and a satisfying clack. Each switch is responsive, smooth, and you can happily glide between them for work involving …
